USC`s Spanish and Portuguese Achievement Award

USC`s Spanish and Portuguese Achievement Award

California is home to many communities with ties to countries that formed the ex-Soviet Union. This California Humanities project aims at bringing together these communities in order to support the people suffering as a result of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia`s military forces.

This project intends to bring awareness of this devastating war, establish a dialogue between the affected communities, and raise funds for Ukrainian charitable organizations.

This project is based on disciplines, such as history, art history, sociology and anthropology, and involves personal narratives, musical performances, exhibitions and discussion panels.

USC`s Spanish and Portuguese Achievement Award

In 2011 Professor Stepanyan established USC`s Spanish and Portuguese Achievement Award that acknowledges students’ unique academic achievements. This award is based on student's performance, overall progress, and participation that go beyond the average course expectations, rather than high grades. Every semester faculty nominate students who show extraordinary achievement throughout the course; the Selection Committee then considers the merits of each nominee and announces the names of the award recipients.

Service - Learning Programs: LINGUA FRANCA

Service - Learning Programs: LINGUA FRANCA

Lingua Franca is a community outreach program that allows students enrolled in Span 220 to collaborate with the USC Child Development center at the UPC campus. This service-learning program provides students with the opportunity to share their skills and talents with the children of the USC Child Development Center, while practicing their Spanish and increasing their awareness of USC’s culturally and socially diverse neighborhood.

As part of this program, students prepare and conduct a mini-course consisting of 4 on-site classes. These 30-minute long classes are conducted at the UPC Child Development Center, and are related to one of the following fields: art, literacy, music, dance, sports, games, science, etc. Students are also required to complete 3 written assignments in Spanish to reflect on their service-learning experience.
